As you get marks for “personal engagement” it is important to use your own examples; your personal voice needs to come across in the essay. But writing your essay like a diary entry won’t lend itself to the critical analysis you need to get the top marks. Think of it as an intellectual enquiry. That doesn’t mean something stuffy, but writing that’s more formal than your diary. You want it to sound intelligent and thoughtful.
